Style File

The gilded elevator gates that divide the bar from the dining room at the back of the new Lower East Side restaurant Mary Queen of Scots are retractable. It’s a feature the guests at the AllSaints-sponsored launch party for Agyness Deyn’s new fashion site, Naag, discovered at the dinner Aggy threw with editor Fiona Byrne, Coco Rocha, Karen Elson (both pictured, left, with Deyn), Zachary Quinto, and SNL’s Seth Meyers. Guests invited to the rocking after-party (where, later, Miike Snow singer Andrew Wyatt deejayed and an all-but-incognito Marion Cotillard danced) but not to the dinner peered through the grate, like visitors at a couture safari.

Naag is the brainchild of Deyn and veteran journalist Byrne, who serves as its editor in chief. It covers fashion, food, and culture, with an eye to up-and-coming young talent. “It all started with me and Fiona at a music festival. It was raining and we were in the tent waiting for the music to start. And I was scanning the Internet,” Deyn explains. “We were like, we should do a site that has all the stuff that we think is rad. We want it to be kind of like a big cultural sister.”

And, it goes without saying, a fashionable sister, too. “It’s funny—at my job I managed to get the one position where you have to wear a suit and tie,” says Meyers, SNL’s head writer who also helms the Weekend Update segments. “I’d like to think that if I was so far out of bounds fashion-wise, Fiona or Aggy would tell me. But now this site saves me the awkwardness of their having to do that to my face.” For the record, he was wearing a plaid shirt and baggy pants. If Big Sister minded, she didn’t let on.

Beyoncé brings alter-ego 'Sasha Fierce' to the clothing racks

Jealous of Beyoncé's smokin' stage style? You, too, can channel your inner "Sasha Fierce" with Beyoncé and her stylist mother's new fashion line.

The capsule collection will channel Beyoncé's "daring and outgoing" alter ego, which became the focus of the singer's latest disc, "I Am ... Sasha Fierce."

But while Beyoncé's concert attire, which she will be modeling on tour this summer in the U.S., would be a bit glitzy - gold-molded leotard, anyone? - on the street, a sneak peek at the line shows more wearable items in basic black.
The collection, which will include handbags, shoes, lingerie and more, will range from $20 to $125 and be available at department stores such as Macy's and Dillard's.

While celebrity lines by Jennifer Lopez and Lauren Conrad have fizzled lately, Beyoncé and Tina Knowles’ fashion endeavor Deréon, which began in 2005, continues to grow with the edgier “Sasha Fierce” collection.

"The line really exudes a different side of my personality, which I am grateful that I can express," Beyoncé said, adding that the line is for "the confident, sensual and daring side of a woman ... and there is a little Sasha Fierce in every girl!"

Textiles and clothing Annual fashion show

This spring's textiles and clothing fashion show will feature about 120 entries, 90 of which will be modeled by Iowa State student models, runway-style. "Pulse, The Rhythm of Fashion" begins at 6:30 p.m. Saturday, April 8, in Stephens Auditorium. Another 30 pieces, including student portfolios and accessory pieces, will be visually displayed in the Stephens foyer. Doors open at 5:30 p.m.
Pulse will include about 75 percent of the entries submitted in this year's student competition. They were created as class assignments and independently. Entries were judged in five categories: evening wear, casual wear, urban wear, experimental (made of non-traditional or recycled materials in an original design) and collection (3-4 pieces). There is a sixth category for all pieces submitted by ISU graduate students.
In addition to the student work, the show will feature collections by two professional designers from New York City. Kristine Eikenbary, head designer for both Flip and Seduis, will showcase her prom dresses and evening gowns. Marck Marcellus, CEO and head designer for The Denim Factory, will bring his collection of urban denim, shirts, and T-shirts.
The show moved from Fisher Theater to Stephens last spring. Student organizers said their goal this year is to sell out Stephens for the single show. Reserved tickets are $20 ($15 for ISU students and children) and available from TicketMaster.

La Ropa Barato Dresses You Well

La Ropa Barato, Spanish for Cheap Clothes, is probably my most favorite find to date! Why, you may ask? As for me, I ADORE chic pieces of clothing. I love how they look on models (who are eating more than just crackers, if I may stress!), Hollywood celebrities who always look fab even when just grocery shopping (less Lindsay and Britney, perhaps), and of course, trusted style magazines.

However, it isn't always easy to steal their looks because number 1, if I were to wear a vintage Chanel dress, a pair of studded Manolos, Tiffany sparkles and a bright Hermes clutch every single day, I will (without question) be pushed into bankruptcy, and number 2, not every style, even non-branded lookalikes can be found in the Philippines--even if our country is home to gazillion bazaars and flea markets!

Of course there are the high street fashion retailers from Europe, Zara, Topshop, Mango and the like, that aim to provide the runway look to everyday women. But because we live with a third world paycheck, even the "cheap" high street clothing aren't always that cheap.

So what is a striving fashionista to do? Enter La Ropa Barato. They are simply the coolest! Here's how it works...
- They give the shopper styles to choose from.
- You pick the look that you want.
- You choose your color, perhaps even the fabric.
- You give or let them get your measurements. They have a size chart, too, so you won't have a hard time.
- And that's it!

You are also free to alter the look as much you want if you really want your own exclusive piece. And best of all, it won't even cost you more than P1,000! Can I just say GREAT?!

Some Styles To Choose From

Now, if you're being skeptical, thinking the clothes won't look as gorgeous as those in the pictures, here is a comparison.

Can frilly Lily tempt you into Marks & Spencer?

There has been a gap in the market for affordable, trend-led clothes with everyday wearability for a couple of seasons now.
Topshop used to provide this service but since its obsession with Kate Moss, and specifically after her collection for the store first appeared, the rest of the brand has suffered.
It seems that high street rival Marks & Spencer has picked up where the Arcadia Group's jewel-in-the-crown left off with its spring-summer Limited Collection range.

M&S has chosen London model Lily Cole to appear in these exclusive campaign shots that will go in the March issue of British Vogue, on sale from Monday.
The collection, including accessories, is going into stores between now and the end of next month.
The fashion industry has already caught on to the allure of the slightly younger and more fashionable Limited Collection from M&S, and chief executive Sir Stuart Rose will hope the public agrees.
THE EXPERT'S VERDICT
SASHA BARRIE, MARIE CLAIRE
"The high street appears to be having a tough time, but it looks as though M&S's spring/summer 2008 collection has some key pieces that you really will lust after. There is a great double-breasted navy pea coat, as well as a bag that echoes the look of the YSL Downtown, and a great red patent-leather jacket - certainly a bit of a must-have, and something that members of our department have already got their eyes on."
LILY COLE, MODEL
"I like the big white boyfriend shirt and long cardigan and I love the blue mac. I like the way a lot of the pieces are on-trend while still being individual, which I think is very clever. The collection is very wearable and the quality and finish are both good. I also like their ethical aspirations and plans to introduce more organic and Fairtrade items to the range. Yes, fashion is fundamentally about style and quality but it's great if it's responsible too."
ANNE-MARIE CURTIS, ELLE
"I think the trick with shopping at Limited Collection is to go for well-cut, good-quality basics. These can be added to your wardrobe and mixed in with more high-end pieces rather than the obvious items that you know everyone else and their auntie will be wearing. I bought a black, silk oversized parka there last winter (very Hamnett) that I wore constantly, and from the summer collection a black cotton billowing shirt which is great for holidays. Recently I've spotted a black, micro-miniskirt that will look great with flat boots and a chunky knit."

Sharks, Space, and Audiotape

Izz
One thing I love about fashion is how creative it is. Designers make clothes for so many purposes, inspired by totally crazy things, like sharks and geckos!
CJ
I don't know much about fashion, but I do know something about sharks. Sharks are excellent swimmers. Speedo, the swimwear company, is designing outfits for human swimmers. They're copying how sharkskin works.

It's another example of "biomimicry." Which is a fancy way of saying we're copying nature. In this case, Speedo says they can reduce "drag" by 4% by copying how water flows over sharkskin. That may not matter much to you or me but if you're an Olympic swimmer, I guess swimming 4% faster is huge.
Alyce Santoro example
Izz
My turn. A lot of jackets have holes for headphone or earbud wires but Alyce Santoro — she's a designer — uses old audio tape to MAKE her clothes. And there are special devices that can even PLAY the music her clothes are made of. She calls it Sonic Fabric.
Dex
Ooh, I've got a future fashion for you. Virgin Galactic are selling tickets for everyday people to fly into space. So a lot of people are working on new kinds of spacesuits — ones that are easier to move around in and that protect astronauts against harsh conditions.
CJ
Yes. I think they're even copying the tiny hairs on gecko feet that let geckos walk on the ceiling to create spacesuit gloves with better grip for working in zero gravity.
Izz
Hold the geckos. Dex, did you say you can BUY tickets to OUTER SPACE? How much are they?

I love guys who look and dress like this!

Clothes and model from APC
Clothes and model from APC
Ok, these are clothes and models from my favourite french clothing brand APC where I shop regularly online. I love the women clothes as well as the men. APC models are my type of guys - they are cute, dress well, thin and quirky and nerdish like.
The picture above on the far right is very nice - simple casual jacket, nice black t-shirt with a bit of personality (The Gold Belt)! The one in the middle, I like the fact that he wears colour (Red) with stripes and the quirkiness is his nike shoes. The one on the far left with simple blue sport jacket, shirt and sweater looks simply stylish. Some people may think they look is a little ‘too gay’ for them. Well, you are wrong mate! You simply have no taste! These looks are stylist and modern. Seriously which era are you living in at the moment. Do you still follow the old trend of blue shirt (boring zzz…) or pink shirt (sooo 1990s).
I also adore the picture below very much, the clothing and the guy ;p. I think he’s really cute and stylish.

First, the grey suit and checked shirt. This is what young professional should look like. Well for work, you probably need a business shirt and tie but this can work for casual friday (in a very conservative workplace). I love the checked shirt and the red belt which adds personality. I also like the boat shoes on the middle and far right look. They look perfect on a coat or just with t-shirt.
So guys what are you waiting for? Go get yourselves new clothes. Guarantee you’ll get my VOTE!
